Civil War on the Precipice

Failure of the Missouri Compromise

The Missouri Compromise of 1850 just delayed the inevitable civil war by a decade. It did nothing to reduce the tensions between the North and South. It wasn't the permanent solution America was looking for. Instead, it brought out new ideas of sovereignty and disliked laws which ignited more fury in the people.

The North hated the Stronger Fugitive Law rebelling against it while the South didn't like the stop of the slave trade in Columbia. This hatred eventually manifested itself in a more costly civil war.

The Missouri Compromise of 1850, accomplished one major thing though, it gave the North more time to prepare and become less dependent on the south allowing them to eventually win the civil war.

Below is the primary sources of the people's reaction to the bills. Click on the picture to read about them.
